There are several types of breast surgery:
Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty)
Breast augmentation improves the appearance, size, and contour of a woman’s breasts. Women consider breast augmentation for many different reasons. Some women feel that their breasts are too small, and some want an enlargement after their breasts have changed due to pregnancy. Others want to correct an asymmetry in breast size.
Breast augmentation is performed using implants (see below) placed under the breast muscle or over it. The incision may be in the armpit, areola (the area around the nipple), or the lower fold of the breast. Generally, all breast augmentations are minimally invasive procedures. In addition, an endoscope (a thin tube with a small camera and light) may also be used for augmentations where the incision is made in the armpit.
Breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with saline (a saltwater solution) or silicone gel. Women can also determine the size they want by trying on the implants. Currently, saline-filled implants are used without restriction.
Breast augmentation is a relatively simple procedure. However, there is always some uncertainty and risk involved, as with any surgical procedure. Therefore, ensure you know your concerns and expectations, review the benefits, risks, and alternatives, and consult a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Breast reduction surgery is often used for women with large, heavy breasts who experience significant discomfort, including neck and back pain and numbness or weakness from the weight of their breasts. In addition, excess skin, fat, and breast tissue are removed during this procedure.
After the procedure, a breast reduction may change a breast’s sensation and result in the inability to breastfeed.
However, after a breast reduction, most women report relief in the symptoms caused by large breasts. See the article on breast reduction surgery for more information on this topic.
Breast reconstruction surgery is often performed on women who have had a mastectomy to treat breast cancer.
